When you think of a holiday such as Halloween, you automatically think of jack-o-lanterns, costumes, candy, black cats, and all things scary. The history of Halloween is similar to what we traditionally celebrate today; however there are some traditions that have changed throughout the ages.
The history of Halloween dates all the way back to ancient times of the Celtic festival Samhain. The Celtic New Year was celebrated on November 1st. On the eve of this celebration, October 31st, the Celts celebrated Samhain which was believed on this particular night the dead could return to Earth. During their celebration they would wear costumes and build huge bonfires, much like we do today.Well, bonfires not so much, but costumes definitely!
In the 800’s Pope Boniface IV declared November 1st to be All Saint’s Day, a day to celebrate saints and martyrs. This celebration was also called All-Hallows, from Old English meaning All Saints’ Day. October 31st was then coined All-Hallows Eve and eventually named Halloween.
So this year for Halloween impress your friends with your new knowledge about Halloween history, and good luck winning first this year in the costume contest!
“When black cats prowl and pumpkins gleam,
May luck be yours on Halloween.”

I love baby showers, it’s always so much fun to spend an entire afternoon with friends and family to celebrate a new bundle of joy that will be arriving soon. If you are throwing a baby shower, then you already know that a lot of hard work goes into the planning of one. Decorating for a baby shower can range from being very simple, to very detailed. Whichever way you decide to decorate you should try personalizing the shower for the mommy-to-be as much as you can.
When trying to figure out place settings for the tables at the shower, center pieces always add a nice touch. I saw two that a thought were adorable. One was Care Bears, and the other a rocking horse. Both of these would compliment any table setting theme you may already have picked. The best feature about these center pieces is that they can be personalized with the name of the expectant parents.
Another baby shower decoration to consider is napkin rings. These adorable pacifier rings you make on your own and it’s a less expensive way to add decor to your table settings. They are easy to assemble, and the directions are given to you step-by-step. A cute feature for these is that you can choose to either have them print out in blue or pink, which adds another level of personalization.
Baby showers are not baby showers unless there are games! A cute baby shower decoration to add to your table settings is baby bingo! Create a custom and personalized bingo game for the guests. You can create a bingo template however you would like, these are personalized and the squares on the baby bingo board can relate to the baby and mommy to be!
Baby Showers are a fun party to plan, and there are many personalized decorations, cards, or invitations that you can create! So have fun and really let you creativity flow to create a special party for the expectant family!
Homemade gifts are always an excellent choice when trying to decide what the perfect present would be for your relatives, especially mom and dad. With Father’s Day coming up, really surprise him this year by showing off your creative side and making him a homemade gift.
Bookmarks
If your dad loves to read and is always “dog-earing” his pages, for father’s day you can make him a bookmark. This bookmark can be personalized to say whatever you would like. If he has a favorite saying you can put that on there. If your dad enjoys cooking or baking you could also put a copy of his favorite recipe on the bookmark.
Coupon Books
I think these are cute and a great way to celebrate dad on father’s day. They are also perfect if your dad likes it when you help him around the house, with these coupons he will be able to get you to help him anytime he needs it. You can personalize them any way you would like, and they also give step by step instructions on how to make them after you have personalized and printed them. A helpful tip: print out the project on scrap paper first to make sure everything is correct.
Message Cards
A really cute homemade gift for father’s day is message cards. They are unique because you can create any kind of message that you want to appear on these cards. I think it’s nice to put a family story on them, one the entire family knows and loves to hear over and over again. Once you have personalized it and printed it out, purchase a frame to put the message card in. If you really want to show off your creativity, you can decorate the frame with quotes and sayings centered on your dad.
Frame Mats
These are perfect gifts to make if you want your gift for father’s day to be more on the sentimental side. You can add handprints and a personalized message on these frame mats. These become the perfect keepsakes and the handprints are adorable. You can also upload a picture of the child to go on the mat with their handprints. This also makes for a fun paint craft with the kids when you are placing the handprints on the mats.
Iron-On’s
These iron-on’s can transfer to almost any fabric. You can upload a picture to the website and add it to a template. Then you can print it out on special paper and attach the picture to things like an apron, canvas tote, t-shirt, shorts, and a lot of other fabric items! These are a perfect gift for dad or grandpa that they can show off to everyone!
Have fun creating your masterpiece for dad this year and don’t forget to send him a card to remind him just how special he is on father’s day!
Shavuot, The Feast of the Weeks, is the Jewish holiday that celebrates the harvest season in Israel, it is held exactly seven weeks after Passover. Shavuot also celebrates the anniversary of giving the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai.
There are many legends and customs of Shavuot. Some of the most common is holding a vigil on the eve of Shavuot. They stay awake from all through the night entertaining themselves with readings from the Torah and the Talmud. Another tradition is eating dishes with dairy such as cheesecake. There is also a custom of decorating the home and the synagogue with tree branches and flowers.
Shavuot is also celebrated to commemorate the giving of the Ten Commandments on Mt. Sinai. Moses climbed the mountain was given the Ten Commandments for the Israelites to follow:
I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods before me.
You shall not take the Name of the Lord your God in vain.
Keep holy the Sabbath day.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not kill.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness.
You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.
This year Shavuot is observed on June 8. So make sure to send your friends that celebrate Shavuot a card to show them you are thinking of them on this religious holiday.
Cinco De Mayo is right around the corner, and it’s the perfect excuse to play Mariachi music and bust out that sombrero from last year’s Halloween Party. The history of Cinco De Mayo is quite interesting, many believe that Cinco De Mayo celebrations are about the independence of Mexico, but that event actually took place in September. If you are interested in a full history of Cinco De Mayo take a look at, Cinco De Mayo History.
If you are hosting a Cinco De Mayo Celebration, no Cinco De Mayo party would be complete without traditional Mexican Cuisine, my personal favorites are the Roasted Salsa, and The Seven Layer Taco Dip. These take some time to make, but they are worth it when they are finished.
If you are not going to be able to celebrate Cinco De Mayo with all of your friends you can always send them Cinco De Mayo cards. A great way to tell your friends that cannot wear a sombrero hat with you on Cinco De Mayo that you will be thinking about them while you are partaking in a Cinco De Mayo Celebration.
Cinco De Mayo is a perfect day to have a fiesta, drink some Margaritas, listen to Mariachi music, wear a sombrero, and eat a lot of Mexican food with your close friends. Have fun and remember Viva el Cinco De Mayo!
A day to remember who founded our country and who’s been running it since. Is that what Presidents’ Day is about? Many sources agree that the origins of President’ Day are based on recognizing George Washington’s birthday, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday and honoring the rest of the United States’ presidents. Here’s a short history of Presidents’ Day:Influences:
The birth and presidency of George Washington
Abraham Lincoln’s birthday
All United States’ presidents
End result? Legislation took effect in 1971 stating that the third Monday in February shall be considered Presidents’ Day.Not all states must follow this legislation (for example, making the day known as George Washington’s birthday while celebrating Abraham Lincoln’s birthday at another date). Some states still consider it a day designated to remember George Washington’s birthday.
Despite origin, how do people celebrate today?According to patriotism.org many American’s in the 19th century celebrated President’s Day with an event known as the “Birthnight Ball,” and they also frequented local taverns.
Other ideas to celebrate Presidents’ Day 2008:
Crafts for children- Kaboose has some wonderfully educational ideas for kids of all ages.
Picnic, picnic, picnic! Indoors or out, the long weekend is a great way to bring the family together for food and fun.
A nice family inclusive President’s Day event could involve a small trip; try visiting a state historical site. Also, national parks such as Yosemite have special accommodations for this date.
President’s Day eCards are a great way to help celebrate the cultural history of the holiday; send to a friend to remind them of our country’s rich history.
The spirit of Valentine’s Day is all about showing your feelings for those you love, those who make a difference in your life. One of the best (and most fun) ways to show your spirited love is to surprise your Valentine with a card that you’ve taken the time to make yourself—even if you haven’t done all the work from scratch. American Greetings’ Create & Print section has dozens of Valentine’s Day cards to choose from. The themes are as varied as your love, and the cards can be personalized with your own messages.
A fun Valentine’s craft idea, the printable cards are fun to customize and print, and the add-a-photo cards contain a picture of a treasured memory (or maybe a clue to a Valentine’s Day surprise…?).
But why stop at sending a card? You don’t have to go out and spend lots of money on expensive gifts to show someone that you care. Often it’s the little things that surprise and please the most. Tuck in a personalized bookmark for the booklover in your life, or wrap the chocolate lover’s favorite candy bar in a wrapper just for him. There are also gift bags and baskets, gift tags and package decorations.
Perhaps you have a love so great and special that you could go on and on forever about their virtues and the wonders of their very existence. Then you’ll need more than just a card to write your odes and sonnets and general jubilations of joy. Valentine’s Day stationery will add a splash of romantic color to your small novel. Then you just have to decide whether to handwrite or type.
Let this Valentine’s Day inspire your creativity. Choose a Valentine’s Day craft that suits your love: it doesn’t matter if you’re giving Valentines to young or old, or making them with children or on your own—these projects and printables are bound to please.
I love crafts — Thanksgiving crafts, Christmas crafts, Easter crafts, any craft will do. When I was a kid, I was — or at least my somewhat biased memory remembers me as being — very creative and crafty. My parents really weren’t into coming up with great holiday projects, so perhaps that’s why I love to find great projects myself.
Nowadays holiday crafts are much easier for parents. The Internet is an amazing resource for finding activities and projects for the kids, and with parents being so focused on the food aspect of Thanksgiving, kids often need something to entertain them. One of the sites that offer a variety of crafts is American Greetings.
One of the Thanksgiving activities offered by American Greetings is this Create & Print concept that adds a little hyperspace to the traditional card making equipment of markers and scissors.
While it is expected that AG would have greeting cards on their site, they also offer other fun crafts like coloring sheets, printable hats (no Thanksgiving without a pilgrim’s hat!), and napkin rings. These craft projects will keep kids busy for a good long while, after which they can watch with pride, as parents and other Thanksgiving guests wear their hats, use their napkin rings, or just admire the bright Thanksgiving coloring pages.
There are lots of other Thanksgiving craft resources out there. I like ones that provide me with printables, and ones that just use simple materials that are likely to already be spread around the house, and for kids they absolutely must be easy to do.
So let’s have fun this holiday and get the creativity flowing with colorful decorations to brighten our Thanksgiving dinners.
