March 18 is Forgive Mom and Dad Day

By migsbassig

One of the non-traditional holidays we celebrate this month of March is Forgive Mom and Dad Day, which falls on the 18th. It’s non-traditional, yes, but it doesn’t mean it’s not warranted. I mean: is there a parent who has not made a mistake? Is there anyone, any human being, who has been born into this world perfect? I don’t think so.

As the date of the March holiday approaches, I’m going to stop being bitter and GET OVER IT. Transgressions by my parents are nothing but evidence that they are human. To make it up to them, I am going to come up with a list of things for which I haven’t yet forgiven them, accompanied by a list of things I plan to do on the occasion of Forgive Mom and Dad Day in order to show that I accept and love them – dearly so.

journal-largeI forgive Mom for reading my diary. I keep a nice little notebook on which I jot down my most private thoughts, feelings, and emotions. One day, I was surprised to find that it had been opened, and was left that way. I was furious. Someone in the family now knew that I fantasized about a high school teacher, and that I liked spending hours at the café just people-watching. Mom readily admitted to it, but because I lost my temper, I haven’t forgiven her to this day. I have decided that the time to do it is now. And then I am going to give her a great photo gift in the form of this lined, customizable spiral journal. You know, so she can stick her nose to her own diary. Ha!

I forgive Dad for telling me to shut up. In hindsight, I now understand the circumstances under which my father asked me to shut my mouth. He was busy. He was writing a report. He had a deadline to beat the next day. Meanwhile, I was playing the guitar sloppily. And I was singing in the most awful way possible. And I was bastardizing one of his favorite records, “The Long and Winding Road” by the Beatles. At the time, I thought he was being so grumpy. So I went to my room and vowed to rebel any which way I could. Now, I should forget it. It’s nearly Forgive Mom and Dad Day. To make up for my bitterness, I am going to get one of these sweet personalized photo mugs for my Dad: so we can both start our days the right way, and bring a smile to the grump and the bad singer.

I am going to continue writing things on this list, but it’s going to be longer than what I have so far let on. Forgiveness is so underrated!

How about you? What are the things for which you will forgive your parents on Forgive Mom and Dad Day? Whatever it is, don’t forget to bless them with your mercy with this nicely done Forgive Mom and Dad Day e-card from American Greetings.
