Top Ten St. Patrick’s Day Drinks

St. Patrick’s Day is often associated with a great time and some great drinks. I went looking and found some pretty interesting St. Patricks’s Day drinks. Ever heard of an Irish Curdling Cow? How about Poteen?

Read on and I think you may just be able to make an educated decision about what festive Irish drink you’d like to consume this March 17! I’ve picked my Top Ten favorite Irish drinks:

1. Guinness Irish Stout – Often compared to having the same complexity and demanding the same tasting time as a wine, Guinness Irish Stout is a beer to be appreciated and enjoyed.

2. Irish Whiskey – There are many different brands of Irish Whiskey and emeraldtiger.com seems to have a good sense about a few of them. The general consensus is that it should be consumed straight up with no mixer. This is a classic St. Patrick’s Day drink.

3. Irish Poteen – Illegal in Ireland to brew because it has been known to cause blindness and death by alcohol poisoning.  This ancient Irish drink (obviously ancient since its banned now) is not meant for a casual drinker.

4. Irish Car Bomb – Another classic St. Patrick’s Day drink, it contains ½ pint of Guinness + 1 shot of whiskey + Bailey’s Irish Cream dropped into the pint. A favorite Irish drink in America, yet scarcely acknowledged in Ireland.

5. Cream Liquor – Commonly known Bailey’s Irish Cream.A good drink straight up or mixed. Here are a few St. Patrick’s Day themed drink recipes with Bailey’s Irish Cream. Chocolate Leprechaun, Irish Curdling Cow, Irish Hot Chocolate, Leprechaun’s Lunch, McGuire’s Fuzzy Irishman, Patti’s Irish Bloody Mary.

6. Meade – An ancient Irish drink made from white wine, honey and herbs. The varieties are numerous depending on what is mixed with basically honey and wine. For a good breakdown of your mead options, head to gotmead.com.

7. St. Patrick’s Day Green Cocktail – 1 oz. Midori melon liqueur + 1 oz whisky sour mix + 2 oz Sprite mixed to create a sweet and festive drink that will knock you on your socks given enough opportunity.

8. Cider – Usually thought of as more of an autumn Irish drink, Bulmer’s Irish Cider is gaining more popularity due to its smooth taste and potent alcohol content.

9. Irish Coffee – shot of Irish whiskey + steaming hot, strong, black coffee + thick double cream.

10. Green Beer – a lighter beer (i.e. Irish Amber, Irish Red Ale, Golden Irish Lager) + green food dye will create a “green beer,” a classic American spin on Irish drinks to celebrate the holiday.
