Celebrate Women’s History Month

By jenn07

Many people do not know much about Women’s History Month. Two significant factors played a part in the emergence of women’s history. The women’s movement of the 1930s caused American women to question their invisibility in traditional history texts. The movement also raised the aspirations, dreams as well as the opportunities of women, and produced a growing number of female historians.

Since then, numerous studies have been conducted and a great of history has been written about women. This history is not just political as history has been in the past but included topics such as history of urban life, public health, ethnicity, the media, and poverty. The very face of what history is changed when women began to uncover their own history in the country and the world.

The public celebration of women’s history in this country began in 1978 as “Women’s History Week” in Sonoma County, California. The week including March 8, International Women’s Day, was selected. In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month, and March was declared Women’s History Month.

With the great accomplishments and evolution of women and their part in society, it would be a shame to let this month go by without celebrating the women in your life. Send all the women you know a free Women’s History Month ecard and celebrate the knowledge we now have due to the brave souls of a few women back a few decades ago.
